STORYLINE:

On May 28th 2014 author and poet Maya Angelou, who rose from poverty, segregation and violence to become a force on stage, screen and the printed page, died, aged 86
Angelou, a Renaissance woman and cultural pioneer, died at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, her son, Guy B. Johnson, said in a statement.
She had been a professor of American studies at Wake Forest University since 1982.
She gained acclaim for her first book, her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," making her one of the first African-American women to write a best-seller.
In 1998, she directed the film "Down in the Delta" about a drug-wrecked woman who returns to her ancestors' home in the Mississippi Delta.
She was the poet chosen to read at President Bill Clinton's first inauguration in 1993.
She wrote and read an original composition, "On the Pulse of Morning."
She was honoured with a National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honour.
In 2013, she received an honorary National Book Award.
