Any decent dance track can get the club kids moving. It’s the ones with a little extra juice that stick in the heads of partygoers when the night is over. There's no question, Shygirl’s beats are bangers, but it's wild lyrics and unabashed confidence that make the the London newcomer's tracks stand out, especially on the dance floor. A raunchy collab with Brit rascal Slowthai, “BDE" finds the singer/rapper exalting the male sex organ. Naming it one of 2021's best rap songs, Pitchfork lauded Shygirl’s “cool dominance” as well as the way she “asserts her desire without hesitation.” That attitude helped fuel the former fashion booker’s rise in the UK grime and queer club scenes, starting with 2016’s “Want More.” Soon Shygirl’s name was sharing credits with alt-darlings like FKA twigs and the late SOPHIE. During the pandemic, the 28-year-old released her ‘ALIAS’ EP. A steady stream of singles, including “Cleo," followed. In that track, she fancies herself as a movie star, so it makes sense that she shined in front of our DSCVR cameras. “All eyes on me… I’m the ruler of the world.” Nothing shy about that.
