Rico Nasty was our first and only choice when looking for an artist that embodies the mood of Bold. Every decision she makes — from her visual aesthetic, to her ear for beats, her lyrics (which are often scathing anti-hater incantations), to her fashion choices — all seem to radiate boldness. She has a magnetism that screams “look at me” paired with a disposition that seems to say “but I don’t care what you see.”

She’s accomplished enough to seem like a seasoned vet on paper, while only being a few years removed from high school. Her first tape came out while still in school, and on her 6th release and first major label project, Nasty, she’s established herself as one of the most exciting voices in rap. On her upcoming project Anger Management, she and Kenny Beats cultivated a sound that’s ferocious, combative, chaotic, precise, unique, and ultimately bold. Her story is full of peaks and valleys, and her life experience has undoubtedly helped form the compelling character she is today. Often compartmentalizing different aspects of her personality into characters like Tacobella, Trap Lavigne, and her main nom de plum Rico Nasty, she has the ability to shapeshift on records to tackle complex emotions on one song, and mercilessly taunt foes on the next.

We sat down with Rico Nasty to talk about her meteoric rise, the complicated 2015 that led to her epic 2016, and how Shrek changed her whole outlook on being a rockstar.
