হিন্দু ধর্মে বিবাহিত নারীদের অন্যতম নিদর্শন হলো শাঁখা, পলা ও মাথায় সিঁদুর। আর এই শাখা ও পলা তৈরী করা হয় শঙ্খ কেটে। হিন্দু ধর্ম মতে বিবাহিত মহীলারা নিজেদের অন্যান্য অলংকারের সাথে শাঁখা, পলা পরেন।স্বামী যতদিন জীবিত থাকেন ততদিন হিন্দু ধর্ম অনুযায়ী শাখা ও পলা পড়তে হয়। স্বামীর মৃত্যু শেষে সেই শাখা ও পলা ভেঙে দেওয়া হয়।

প্রাচীন ভারতের অন্যতম একটি লোক শিল্প হলো শঙ্খ শিল্প। হিন্দু ধর্মীয় নীতি মেনে মাঙ্গলিক চিন্হ স্বরূপ অনেকেই এই অলংকার ব্যবহার করে আসছেন প্রাচীন কাল থেকেই। আনুমানিক ২০০০ বছর আগে ভারতে উৎপত্তি হয় শঙ্খ-শিল্পের। পরে রাজা বল্লাল সেনের হাত ধরে দক্ষিণ ভারত থেকে এই রীতি বাংলাতেও প্রবেশ করে। বাংলায় তখন ব্যাপক হারে সূচনা হয় সাকা শিল্পের প্রচলন ও ব্যবহার।

তবে এবার জেনে নেওয়া যাক শাখা ব্যবহারের প্রসঙ্গে ইতিহাস ও মানুষের প্রচলিত বিশ্বাস সম্পর্কে
ব্রহ্মবৈবর্ত পুরাণের বর্ণনা অনুযায়ী, এক অত্যাচারী অসুরের উপদ্রবে দেবতারা অতিষ্ঠ হয়ে ওঠেন। ওই অসুরের নাম ছিল শঙ্খাসুর। এ দিকে শঙ্খাসুরের স্ত্রী তুলসী দেবী ছিলেন নারায়ণের একনিষ্ঠ ভক্ত। কিন্তু শঙ্খাসুরের অত্যাচারের শাস্তি দিতে নারায়ণ তাকে বধ করেন। শঙ্খাসুরের ধর্মপরায়ণ স্ত্রী তুলসী দেবী তখন নারায়ণের কাছে নিজের ও স্বামীর অমরত্বের প্রার্থনা করেন। নারায়ণ তুলসী দেবীর প্রার্থনায় সন্তুষ্ট হয়ে তার (তুলসী দেবী) ও শঙ্খাসুরের দেহাংশ (হাড়) থেকে শাঁখার সৃষ্টি করেন এবং বিবাহিত সম্পর্কের মাঙ্গলিক চিহ্ন হিসাবে এটির ব্যবহারের নির্দেশ দেন। মনে করা হয়, সেই থেকেই হিন্দু ধর্মীয় রীতিতে বিবাহিত সম্পর্কের মাঙ্গলিক চিহ্ন হিসেবে শাঁখার প্রচলন হয়।


এ তো গেল পুরাণের বর্ণনা। ব্রিটিশ লেখক জেমস ওয়াইজের লেখা থেকে জানা যায়, বল্লাল সেনের সঙ্গে দক্ষিণ ভারত থেকে শাঁখারিরা এসেছিলেন।

অর্থাৎ, আজ থেকে প্রায় ৯০০ বছর আগেও শাঁখার প্রচলন ছিল। ঐতিহাসিকদের মতে, বল্লাল সেনের অনেক আগে থেকে (প্রায় ২,০০০ বছর আগে দক্ষিণ ভারতে শঙ্খশিল্পের উদ্ভব ঘটে) দক্ষিণ ভারতে অলঙ্কার হিসাবে শাঁখার প্রচলন ছিল। তবে তার পেছনে কোনও ধর্মীয় কারণ ছিল কিনা— সে বিষয়ে মতানৈক্য রয়েছে।
