You pick up a super good book, settle down on the couch to read it and all is fine and dandy until you get up to grab something and find that your entire leg is numb. And then, even worse, as sensation starts to come back, you feel pins and needles, tingling and pain.

Welcome to the fun of paresthesia, which is thankfully only temporary in this situation.

This annoying nerve pain can be caused by a number of things, from viral infections to autoimmune disorders, but for the occasional arm, leg or foot falling asleep is related to blood flow.

When you sit or lean in the same position, the compression of the shape can disrupt or decrease blood flow to the limb. The decrease in blood flow leads to a decrease in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the area.

Your nerves will continue to send signals, regardless of what shape you’re in. But when you’ve compressed the limb, the nerve signals can start to go a little haywire.

Some nerves may stop firing while others may continue to fire erratically. This is very confusing for the brain, and in the chaos, your brain can interpret an array of sensations from warmth, numbness or tingling.

This response is a warning signal to move or change positions. While this temporary sensation should not cause long-term damage, chronic blood flow disruption or compression to an area could.

And here’s the kicker - you get up to move and it gets worse! As blood flow returns to the area, the nerves still have a bit of delay before they respond to the change in shape and so your brain is still responding to the chaos.

Smaller nerves may rebound quicker while larger nerves take a bit of time to change. Your motor neurons are the first to respond, which is why you can usually walk and move before sensation returns.

The quick fix for this temporary nerve response is to move and restore blood flow.
