On the night of December 2, 1984, the Union Carbide pesticide plant on Berasia Road in Bhopal, India, became the site of the world’s worst industrial disaster. The catastrophe was triggered during a routine pipe-cleaning operation. A worker was water-washing a clogged filter but failed to insert a "slip blind"—a metal safety disc—to isolate the storage tanks.

Through this mechanical failure, over 500kg of water leaked into Tank E610, which contained 42 tons of highly reactive Methyl Isocyanate (MIC). The water triggered a violent exothermic reaction, causing temperatures to surge to 300°C and pressure to hit 160 psi. Every single safety system failed: the refrigeration unit was turned off to save money, the caustic soda scrubber was in disrepair, and the flare tower—meant to burn off leaks—had been dismantled for maintenance weeks earlier.

By 12:15 a.m. on December 3, a massive plume of toxic gas burst into the night air. Victims described the smell of "boiled cabbage" before their eyes and lungs began to burn. Over 3,000 people died instantly, with the final death toll estimated at over 15,000. As of 2025, the site remains a "Ghost Plant" and a toxic "dead zone," with survivors still battling Dow Chemical for the cleanup of contaminated groundwater that continues to poison the local population.
