Automated Fiber Placement, which is developed on the basis of automatic tape laying and fiber winding, is called the fourth-generation placement machine, which can lay both fiber tapes and fiber bundles.

In 1983, a commercial tape laying machine entered the production field. 80% of the skin of the F-16 and 4 wing panels of the F-22, with an area of ​​5.49mx 5.18m, a thickness of 3.8~14.2mm, and a weight of 113kg, The parts of the Boeing 777 are produced by automatic tape laying. The application of an automatic tape laying machine saves time and labor to the greatest extent, and the speed is 10 times higher than that of manual work. Save raw materials, the scrap rate is only 3%~5% (25%~30% by hand). Improve the accuracy and quality of parts and reduce costs. Generally speaking, the larger the part size, the higher the efficiency. For manual operation, 5mx2.5m is its critical size. The automatic tape laying technology uses the unidirectional prepreg tape with isolation lining paper as the raw material, completes the cutting of the predetermined shape in the tape laying head, and directly lays it on the surface of the mold under the action of the pressing roller after heating. When the prepreg tape is laid on the mold surface, the backing paper is removed by the tape-laying head. When the prepreg tape is laid, the tape laying head can cut the prepreg tape from different angles as needed. The automatic tape laying mainly uses thermosetting resin prepreg tape, and the same thermoplastic resin prepreg tape can also be used. Hot-shoe or laser welding is used when laying thermoplastic resin prepreg tapes. In order to ensure the quality of automatic tape laying, line scanning and oblique light pulses are often used for online monitoring and timely correction of the tape laying trajectory. Automatic tape laying is divided into flat tape laying (FTLM) and curved tape laying (CTLM) according to the laying function: 150mm and 300mm wide prepreg tapes are used for flat tape laying, while 75mm and 150mm are usually used for curved tape laying. Wide prepreg tape; the former has extremely high laying efficiency and is mainly used for the laying of small-curvature wing panels, while the latter can realize the laying of medium-curvature panels, and can realize the laying of small-curvature curve tracks within a certain range, Suitable for laying large-sized fuselage and other components.

AFP (Automated Fiber Placement) is one of the important means to realize the "low cost and high performance" of composite materials. AFP technology is especially suitable for manufacturing parts with complex shapes, the laying speed is 5~30m/min, up to 60m/min; the accuracy is ±0.5°, ±0.25mm. High speed, high material utilization, good quality of parts, low production cost, and large-area integral forming technology can reduce costs by 50%. Composite automatic laying technology mainly includes automatic tape laying ATL (Automated Tape Laying) and automatic wire laying ATP (Automated Tow Placement) technology. The use of automated placement techniques can significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing composite components with complex shapes. The earliest research on automatic laying technology comes from the manufacture of the composite material fuselage. If the winding technology is used to manufacture the fuselage, the problem encountered is that the winding tension causes gaps in the concave surface, and the winding tension causes the fibers to slip and deviate from the proper position and winding. I arts cannot effectively change the thickness. The fiber laying techniques solve the above problems, it can lay and compact continuous prepreg fibers on large and complex surfaces, and the fibers are laid on the mandrel completely under no pressure. When laying the prepreg tape, the width of the prepreg tape can be adjusted as needed. The automatic laying accuracy can reach 0.005mm. In order to adjust the viscosity, the fiber prepreg tape can be heated or cooled. The automatic laying technology has been widely used, and the effect of significantly reducing the cost has been obtained.
