At Slate and Mortar, we recognise the power of storytelling to drive impactful change. Our recent project with the University of Warwick aimed to spark essential conversations around mental health by sharing real student experiences, with the goal of encouraging support-seeking behaviours and promoting the availability of on-campus mental health services.

The project brought together authentic student-written stories, portrayed by talented student actors, allowing for a genuine connection with the audience. Mental health is a sensitive subject, so we collaborated closely with the university to ensure that each narrative was told with care, ensuring its message remained both relatable and respectful.

Key elements of our approach included:

Fine-tuning the scripts to retain the authenticity and emotional honesty of each personal account.
Hosting virtual rehearsals to align the actors' performances with the creative vision of the project.
Using cinematic techniques, including dual-camera setups, to capture every emotional nuance in detail.
Incorporating B-roll footage to personalise the content, showcasing aspects of student life on campus.
Adding a QR code for direct access to vital mental health resources, seamlessly blending support with storytelling.

By filming against a simple grey backdrop, we allowed the focus to remain entirely on the actors and their performances, which gave the stories the emotional weight they needed. The end result is a moving and visually striking video that not only raises awareness of mental health but encourages students to actively #GetWarwickTalking.

This video has already proven to be an invaluable tool for the University of Warwick, serving as a bridge between students and the mental health services available to them. We are proud to have created something that will continue to support and empower students for years to come.
