My brain doesn’t tell me to breathe…. but this does!

It’s a diaphragmatic pacemaker and I actually had it placed 6 years ago this month! It was a pretty big surgery and honestly a lot of my doctors weren’t even sure if I would survive it, let alone if the device itself would even help me.
We weighed the risks versus benefits; and concluded that basically if I didn’t get it, I wouldn’t be living much longer.
Soooo I took a big chance and my team and I decided to give it a try. It was a major surgery, lifesaving interventions were used.
The road to recovery was long, and I had to adjust to using the pacemaker a little bit more each day. The process of adjusting to using it 24/7 to breathe for me actually took a couple of months!
Looking back, I can confidently say it was the best decision I’ve ever made! Happy pace-iversary to me and my fantastic surgeon/the inventor of this device, Dr. Onders 🫶🏻
