The name “Cape Coral” was created by the Rosen brothers—Leonard and Jack Rosen, real estate developers from Baltimore.
• “Cape” was likely chosen for marketing appeal, even though Cape Coral is not a true cape (a landmass extending into the sea).
• “Coral” was selected for its exotic, tropical-sounding allure, evoking images of paradise and Florida’s marine beauty—though there is no natural coral reef nearby.

✅ It was entirely invented as a brand, much like “Golden Gate” or “Palm Springs” in other parts of the U.S.



Founding and Early Development

📅 Established: 1957
• In 1957, the Rosens’ company, Gulf American Land Corporation (GALC), purchased 103 square miles of mostly swampy land on the northwest bank of the Caloosahatchee River in Lee County.
• The project was called the Cape Coral development.

📈 The “Waterfront Wonderland”
• The Rosens marketed it as the “Waterfront Wonderland”—a suburban utopia with affordable waterfront living for middle-class Americans.
• They built over 400 miles of canals (more than any other city in the world), helping sell the idea of boating, fishing, and paradise living.

1958 First residents moved in.
1964 Cape Coral Yacht Club opened – still a landmark today.
1964 First bridge (Cape Coral Bridge) connecting to Fort Myers completed.
1970 Population reached ~11,000.
1970 Incorporated as a city on August 18, 1970.
1980s–2000s Rapid suburban expansion, especially with retirees and families.
2000–2020 Cape Coral became one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S.
