Have been exploring Peru for almost 3 years now and finally made it to Peru's 'gateway to the Amazon', Iquitos.

You can only fly or take a boat to arrive here and it is almost like an island because of the limited access.
The city is WILD to say the least and you can find pretty much anything you're looking for here, IF you know where to look. Many foreigners descend upon Iquitos to attend sacred healing ceremonies such as Ayahuasca and there are many locals who are familiar with the seemingly endless number of medicinal plants that the jungle offers.

The proximity to the Marañón and Amazon rivers provides local fisherman with an abundance of fish and you can find them all over the markets.

The one glaring, impossible-to-avoid detail of Iquitos, though, is the NOISE. The majority of the residents use a 'moto-taxi' or 'tuk-tuk' for transportation and they are LOUD! No matter where you walk, the constant stream of hundreds of tiny motorcycle exhaust pipes, floods the city streets, an inescapable sound. Come prepared with ear plugs or listen to music.

Be prepared, as well, to see some very impoverished areas of the city. Peru, like most countries in South America, does not have the best social welfare programs and you will usually see senior citizens (mostly women) doing whatever they have to do to earn a little money. They are such strong, resilient people, but it breaks your heart to see what money can do to people and the result of a less-than-capable government. If you visit Iquitos, patronize these people and give them smile. Lord knows, they need it.

Overall, a highly recommended experience, but you will only need a few days here.
