On July 8th, 2014, Israel launched Operation Protective Edge to stop increasing rocket fire by Hamas.

Tensions were high after Hamas kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers. The operation lasted 7 weeks and led to 72 dead in Israel. One of Israel’s main aims was to destroy Hamas’ tunnels in Gaza. The tunnels were used for planning attacks, moving weapons, and for the capture of Gilad Shalit. Israel’s air-defense system, the Iron Dome, intercepted 735 of the 4,500 rockets fired by Hamas. A 72-hour cease-fire was agreed on but it did not hold. After Hamas killed two IDF soldiers in a suicide bombing attack. Hamas was widely condemned for using civilians as human shields and setting up rocket launching sites from hospitals and schools. Another cease-fire was agreed on August 26th. However, Hamas violated the terms of the cease-fire 20 days later and continues its attacks on Israel today. In the past months, Hamas attacks on Israel have continued during the Nakba campaign.
