You’ve heard of pop-up stores but how about pop-up museums?

One of the newest and more unique buildings to pop up in Malaga, Spain is the first international offshoot of Paris’s Centre Pompidou. This “provisional exhibition center,” built in 2015, rests on the edge of Malaga’s beautiful harbor. While most of the museum is subterranean, its entrance is marked by “El Cubo,” a colorful glass cube designed by the renowned French minimalist artist, Daniel Buren.
The museum houses about 90 of the museums permanent collection and displays an additional 2-3 temporary exhibitions a year. In the summer of 2017, Centre Pompidou Malaga is showing the work and drawings of the famous interior designer, Phillippe Stark, in an exhibit entitled, “Stark, Secret Drawings”

The city of Malaga has agreed for the Centre Pompidou to remain at the harbor for 5 years with an option to extend its stay. Let’s hope they do! It’s a wonderful, cultural addition to this gorgeous often underrated Andalusian city.

Local tip: Visit the Centre Pompidou Malaga on Sundays after 4 pm and admission is free! That gives you plenty of time to see all this little pop-up museum has to offer.

There are negotiations underway for new pop-up Pompidous in other cities including Seoul in 2017 and Shanghai in 2018.
