Long unwinding might sound like a complicated market term, but it’s actually quite simple once you break it down.

Think of it like this — when traders or investors buy a stock or a contract expecting its price to go up, that’s called taking a long position. But when they start feeling the price might fall or they just want to book profits, they sell what they previously bought.

This act of selling those earlier purchases is known as long unwinding.

It usually happens in the futures and options (F&O) market, and it often tells us that the market mood is changing — from bullish (optimistic) to bearish (cautious or negative).

For example, imagine you bought a stock at ₹100 because you believed it would rise. The price goes up to ₹120 — great! Now, to lock in your profit, you sell it. That selling of your earlier “long” position is exactly what we call long unwinding.
