The Mycenaean civilization prospered in the late Bronze Age and extended its influence throughout the Peloponnese region in Greece, as well as the islands of the Aegean Sea, from Crete to the Cyclades. Its name derives from the principal city, Mycenae, located in Argolid, in the northeast of the Peloponnese. This was the first advanced civilization known in mainland Greece, characterized by its urban organization, palaces, art, and writing system. The Mycenaeans were influenced by the earlier Minoan civilization between (2000-1450 BC), which originated in Knossos, Crete, and spread throughout the Aegean region.

Elements of Minoan architecture, art, and religion were incorporated and adapted by the Mycenaean culture, which tended to be more militaristic and austere. In Greece, the Mycenaeans were known as the Achaeans, as recorded by Homer. They established major cities in the region, with Mycenae being the most prominent, although Tiryns and Argos also played important roles. In addition to their impressive architecture, Mycenaean cities were highly fortified.
