Imagens de arquivo referentes aos episódios de 18 e 19 de dezembro de 1961, quando uma força combinada de 45 000 homens da União Indiana invade e ataca os territórios do Estado Português da India. De forma a repelir tão desproporcional investida, as autoridades portuguesas dispunham de cerca de 3500 homens e algumas peças de artilharia.
Apesar da destemida resistência, que permitiu conter as forças indianas durante 48 horas, Vassalo e Silva Governador do território decide contrariar as ordens de Salazar e render-se com o argumento de a derrota era inevitável tendo em conta a desproporcionalidade de forças, assim sendo, tornava-se imperativo preservar as vidas humanas e as infraestruturas de Goa, Damão e Dio.
O resultado final das hostilidades determinou a morte de 30 militares portugueses e 22 militares das forças indianas, aos quais se somaram centenas de feridos e 3500 prisioneiros de guerra que só regressariam a Portugal no ano de 1962.

Archive images referring to the episodes of December 18 and 19, 1961, when a combined force of 45,000 men from the Indian Union invaded and attacked the territories of the Portuguese State of India. In order to repel such a disproportionate attack, the Portuguese authorities had around 3,500 men and some artillery pieces at their disposal.
Despite the fearless resistance, which allowed the Indian forces to be contained for 48 hours, Vassalo e Silva Governor of the territory decided to go against Salazar's orders and surrender with the argument that defeat was inevitable taking into account the disproportionality of forces, therefore, it became imperative to preserve human lives and infrastructure in Goa, Daman and Dio.
The final result of the hostilities determined the death of 30 Portuguese soldiers and 22 soldiers from the Indian forces, to which were added hundreds of wounded and 3500 prisoners of war who would only return to Portugal in 1962.
