The infamous Son of Beast is know today for all the wrong reasons. Announced in May of 1999, Son of Beast was the follow up to the legendary Beast at Kings Island. The sequel would be constructed by the Roller Coaster Corporation of America, and would set a new record for Tallest, Fastest, and Longest Drop on a wooden roller coaster, and featuring a world's first Vertical Loop on a wooden coaster. Unfortunately, today the ride is remembered for it's short lived time in Mason, Ohio. From it's structural issues and construction disputes, the ride would only run for 5 and a half seasons before a cracked beam in the structure forced the ride to close. During the 06-07 off season, the 118 foot signature element Vertical Loop was removed, and the ride reopened in July of 2007 with the heavy Premier built trains being replaced with lighter Gerstlauer trains from the now defunct Hurricane at Myrtle Beach Pavilion. The new lease on life was short lived when in June of 2009 a woman reported severe head injuries while riding the troubled coaster. Son of Beast would remain closed from June of 2009 until July of 2012 when in was announced the ride would be removed for future developments.
