Appling air layering method for growing hibiscus plant at home

Here is a simple, step-by-step guide to this reliable method.

What You Will Need
A healthy parent hibiscus plant.

A sharp, clean knife.

A Rooting Medium: A simple and very effective mix is 50% garden soil (মাটি) and 50% compost (সার) or well-rotted cow manure. (As we've discussed before, moist cocopeat is also an excellent, professional-grade alternative).

A piece of clear plastic (from a food bag or shopping bag).

String or rope to tie the plastic.

Rooting Hormone Powder (optional, but it will speed up the process and increase reliability).

The Step-by-Step Air Layering Process
Step 1: Choose a Healthy Branch

Select a healthy, straight branch from the current season's growth.

The ideal branch should be about the thickness of a pencil or your finger. The bark should be semi-mature (a light brown colour), not old and dark woody, and not brand new and soft green.

Step 2: Prepare the Branch (The Ring Cut)
This is the most important physical step of the process.

Choose a spot about 1 foot from the tip of the branch.

Using your sharp knife, carefully make two parallel cuts all the way around the stem, about 1 inch apart.

Slice the bark between these two cuts and peel the entire ring of bark off, exposing the whitish wood underneath.

Crucial Tip: Gently scrape the exposed wood to remove any remaining slippery green layer (this is the cambium). This step is what encourages the plant to form new roots from this point.

Step 3: Apply Rooting Hormone (Optional Boost)

If you are using rooting hormone, apply the powder with a small brush or your finger to the top edge of the cut you just made. This is where the new roots will emerge from.

Step 4: Apply the Rooting Ball

Take your soil and compost mixture and add a small amount of water to make a firm, moist mud ball that holds its shape (it should not be dripping wet).

Pack this mud ball firmly and completely around the exposed, cut part of the branch. Ensure there are no air gaps.

Step 5: Wrap and Secure

Take your piece of clear plastic and wrap it completely around the mud ball.

Use your string to tie both the top and bottom ends very tightly, like a candy wrapper. This is essential to lock in the moisture and keep the rooting ball in firm contact with the stem.

What to Expect and Next Steps
Root Growth: Hibiscus roots quite easily with this method. In the current warm weather, you can expect to see the first white roots pressing against the clear plastic in about 4 to 8 weeks.

When to Cut: Be patient and wait until the plastic ball is filled with a dense network of roots. The more roots you see, the stronger your new plant will be.

Planting Your New Hibiscus Plant:

Use a sharp saw or secateurs to cut the branch from the parent tree just below the new root ball.

Carefully remove the plastic wrap, but do not break up or disturb the ball of soil and roots.

Plant this entire root ball into a medium-sized pot with good quality potting soil.

Water it well and keep the new plant in a semi-shaded location for one to two weeks to let it recover and adapt before moving it to a sunnier spot.
