Opa! 🇬🇷 This Greek Easter, our family's backyard was bursting with love, laughter, and the smell of slow-roasting lamb on the spit. From early morning egg hunts with the kids at 6:30 am 🐣 to cracking eggs with “Christos Anesti!” and gathering around the table for a traditional Greek feast—this day was full of unforgettable memories.

Our little ones ran WILD with excitement, hunting for chocolate eggs and learning about the beautiful customs passed down from Yiayia. We roasted a full lamb over charcoal, made homemade tsoureki, and danced our way through the day surrounded by family and tradition.

🐑 The Religious Symbolism:
Lamb represents Jesus Christ, who is often referred to in the Bible as the “Lamb of God.” Roasting the lamb during Easter symbolizes Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, which is the central focus of Orthodox Easter.

🔥 The Tradition:
Roasting a whole lamb on a spit (called “arni souvlas”) is a centuries-old Greek tradition, especially in rural areas. It brings people together—family, friends, and neighbors all gather outdoors to cook, eat, and celebrate. It’s not just about food, it’s about community and joy after the 40 days of fasting during Lent.

🍽️ The Celebration:
After a long period of fasting, Easter Sunday is the first day people can eat meat again. The lamb, along with dishes like magiritsa (Easter soup) and tsoureki (sweet bread), marks the breaking of the fast and is a joyful, abundant feast.
