Leon’s family, of British origin and European immigrants, settled in the early nineteen-seventies in Pofadder, a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Despite its size, the town was an important economic and tourist hub in the Bushmanland region. In 1976, the family welcomed their first son, Tokkie, and three years later, Leon was born.

By local standards, the family was considered quite wealthy. Leon's father owned the largest hotel in the area, which was later expanded into a famous hotel-restaurant complex. Brothers Tokkie and Leon were raised attentively, studied hard, were active in sports and received the best education thanks to the efforts of their parents.

After finishing school, Tokkie moved away from Pofadder, while Leon, who had been helping his parents and learning the hospitality business since his teens, chose to stay and prepare to take over the family enterprise. With his quick wit, meticulousness and business acumen, he ran the business smoothly.
