What began as a search for meaningful work for their son, Bradley—who was born with Fragile X syndrome—turned into something even bigger. As Bradley approached the end of his school years, Tempa and her husband, Michael, faced the same tough question many families of children with disabilities do: what comes next? With Tempa’s passion for baking, which started when she was just seven years old, they found their answer in Special Kneads and Treats, their family-owned bakery in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

They soon realized that many other families were seeking meaningful employment opportunities for their young adults with disabilities. Tempa and Michael felt called to open a bakery that could meet this important need in the disability community. Special Kneads and Treats launched in 2014 with two important goals: first, to create jobs for young adults with disabilities; second, to provide free birthday cakes to children whose families may not be able to afford one. The bakery serves an average of 600 customers per week. Special Kneads and Treats employs 39 paid staff members and 17 volunteers, of whom 31 staff and 6 volunteers have disabilities. An additional 150+ people with disabilities seeking employment are on the bakery’s waiting list.
