Though most of his works are rarely performed nowadays, Mouret was one of the most prominent French composer during his lifetime. Born in Avignon, he settled in Paris in 1707. From 1708, he became Surintendant de la musique of the Duchess of Maine at Sceaux. There, he was in charge of the sixteen bi-weekly Grandes nuits de Sceaux in 1714-1715 for which he produced Intermèdes and cantatas. In 1714, Mouret also received an appointment as the director of the orchestra of the Opéra, a post which he held until 1718. From 1717 to 1737 he directed the Nouveau Théâtre Italien for which he composed divertissements that accompanied, for example, the comedies of Marivaux. Concurrently, he was director of the concert series established by the orchestra of the Opéra, the Concerts Spirituel (1728–1734). His later years were overshadowed by financial and social disappointments. Sinking into poverty and madness, Mouret died in the Asile de Charenton in 1738. Due to his melodic talent, he won the nickname "le musicien des grâces". (from Wikipedia)
This incidental music was composed for the comedy Le Triomphe de Plutus by Marivaux, a satire against the power of money, compared to which, especially in love, the one of the mind has never been worth anything. The sung texts are by François-Charles Panard.
