With the support of the Asian Development Bank, the Government of Sri Lanka has built a wind farm on Mannar Island in the country’s Northern Province. It supports the country’s goal of producing 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and paves the way to its ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

Power generated from the wind farm is connected to the national grid and is supplying electricity to households in Sri Lanka.

An innovative feature of the wind farm is the use of a bird radar mechanism which automatically stops the wind turbines to ensure safe passage of migratory birds.
