[OLD VERSION] Cryoshell Mix: Gravity Hurts 2008/2018 (Duet)

Duet version with Niels Brinck and Christine Lorentzen. This old remix does not shift the pitch of either version.

Back in 2008, Cryoshell wrote "Gravity Hurts" to promote the Phantoka toyline of BIONICLE, featuring Brinck as the vocalist and a hard rock instrumentation. Ten years later, they have rereleased the song as a single, now featuring Lorentzen as the vocalist and a full orchestration by the Budapest Art Orchestra.

Personally, I like the 2018 version a lot better than the 2008 version; I think it fits the weight and drama of the Phantoka storyline much more than the original does. Of course, others still prefer the 2008 version, and that's perfectly fine by me. But it got me wondering... how would the two versions sound together?

The result is symphonic rock, combining the drums and electric guitars of the 2008 version with the strings and brass of the 2018 version. Some might argue that this fusion sound is an even better fit for BIONICLE than just either rock or orchestral alone.

To my surprise, the two versions have nearly indistinguishable tempos, which I discovered when I played them both at once and found that the lyrics matched up almost perfectly. At the beginning, Brinck and Lorentzen are slightly out of sync, but that can be handwaved as the singer's stylistic choice rather than a tempo issue, especially since they start singing in unison as the mashup continues.

The ending has a bit of an awkward fadeout, but that's because the 2008 version also ended on an awkward fadeout. I wanted to make it sound nicer, but Brinck just HAD to have the last word, preventing me from having a transition from loud to soft without abruptly cutting him off.

I'm aware that there is in fact a third version that was released around 2013, featuring Tine Midtgaard as the vocalist. I chose not to include it because I didn't want this mix to sound too messy, with three different versions of the song playing at once. Someone else is welcome to try their hand at it, however.
