Joy Mukherjee was an Indian film actor and director. He was born on 24 February 1939 in Jhansi, United Provinces, British India. His father Sashadhar Mukherjee was a successful producer and a co-founder of Filmalaya Studios. His mother was Sati Devi. His mother was the only sister of the Ganguly brothers. His brothers are Late Rono Mukherjee, Late Shomu mukhergee, Deb Mukherjee and Subir Mukherjee.

His wife's name is Neelam. The couple had two sons Monjoy, Sujoy and a daughter Simran. His uncles were director Subodh Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar. Actress Tanuja was his sister in law. Kajol Mukherjee, Tanisha Mukherjee, Actresses Rani Mukerji and Sharbani Mukherjee are his nieces and director Ayan Mukerji is his nephew.
