As a practicing chiropractor who has treated many car accident victims over the years, I understand that even low speed impacts can cause damage to the human body.

Unfortunately, insurance adjustors responsible for paying for treatment have not exactly felt this same way.

"No crash, no cash" was the mantra. If there was little to no property damage to the vehicles, there's no way an injury could have occurred.

I've had a patient get rear-ended at an ATM (like...how fast could the other driver have been going?) who had significant injuries to a patient who had just an injured finger from a roll-over accident that left two passengers dead and a third still in a rehab hospital.

The insurance industry has always liked to compare low impact collisions to various things done in the course of life (referred to as Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs), like plopping down into a seat or climbing stairs.

Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, these aren't good comparisons and don't take into account a lot of other factors, especially an expectation of the incoming crash.

In this review of 33 studies, researchers compared volunteer crashes (think crash-test dummies at low speed) to ADLs to real-world evaluations of impact force.

And it doesn't look good for the insurance companies.
