Item 9: General Debate : Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance

We are deeply concerned by institutionalized racial discrimination in Yemen, particularly targeting Muhamasheen.
A recent report by the Norwegian Refugee Council highlights that 79% of Muhamasheen lack national ID cards, denying them access to basic services, education, and healthcare. This intergenerational discrimination perpetuates cycles of poverty and statelessness, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and violence.
Moreover, climate change exacerbates their plight. Environmental disasters, such as floods and cyclones, disproportionately affect the Muhamasheen, who often live in precarious conditions. Displacement caused by these disasters increases their exposure to gender-based violence and further limits their access to resources and protection.
We urge the Human Rights Council to:
Support Yemen to address the intersecting challenges of racial discrimination and climate change faced by the Muhamasheen.
Demand that Yemen ensures that Muhamasheen have access to legal identity, civil documentation, and protection, in line with international human rights obligations.
