Tanpura (तानपूरा; or tambura, tanpuri) is a long-necked plucked string instrument, originating from India and used widely in varied forms of Indian classical music. It is an essential accompanying instrument that provides a reference point to other musicians or artists for creating and improvising their music. In western music, it is also called a Drone due to its unique quality to emit sustained, unbroken sound throughout the performance of a music piece.

The two popular variants of Tanpura available in the present day are the Miraj style mainly used by the Hindustani performers, while another one is the Tanjore style, which is a south Indian variant of Tanpura, widely used by Carnatic performers.
