The first time Melfice is encountered in the game he is invincible and you have to lose to him in order to continue the game. Therefore all you have to do is keep healing your party and wait until he uses his most powerful move which triggers the end. I've heard of some people defeating him using very particular move/moves however nothing in the game changes.
