If a grinding, rubbing chain doesn't annoy you - well it annoys the people with whom you ride. What's more, if your power-train is Di2, you paid way too much for your bike to let is sound like a piece of junk.

Normally, that grinding or rubbing sound indicates a need to fine-tune the rear derailleur. If you have done that and still hear the annoying grind the problem could be at the FRONT derailleur.

Start with the front derailleur on the small chainring and the rear derailleur on the largest sprocket. Turn the crank, if you hear the noise and see the chain touching the chain guide of the front derailleur it’s time for an adjustment.

If not, then begin shifting to the smallest sprocket on the back, listening for the grind. If the grind begins about halfway to the smallest sprocket, the problem may be with the big chanring. So, shift to the big ring on front and the next to largest sprocket on the rear derailleur.

If you have rub here, you need to adjust. If not, keep shifting the rear down to the smallest sprocket. If you have grinding here – adjust.

To adjust - press and hold the button on the junction box until the red light illuminates; about 5 seconds. Now you’re in adjustment mode and should set the clearance between the chain and the front derailleur. Make micro adjustments using the lever you normally use to shift the front derailleur.

If you’re on the small chainring and largest sprocket, adjust the clearance between the chain and the derailleur inside plate should be between 0.2 and 0.5 mm (a business card is about 0.3 mm).

If the grinding is happening on the large chainring, and the smallest sprocket adjust the clearance between the chain and the derailleur should be between 0.25 and 0.5 mm. The chain could be rubbing either the inside or outside plate of the front derailleur - check and adjust accordingly.

When you finish making adjustments, press and hold the button on junction until all the lights turn off - you have now turned OFF the adjustment mode. At this point you want to test your work.

Start on the small chain ring and work through the gears on the rear, listening for the grind. Next, shift to the big ring and work through the rear gears, again listening for a grind.
