The sound of the African bush on a hot afternoon is pretty relaxed. Gone is the lush dawn chorus as most animals are avoiding the scorching midday sun. Birds are taking refuge in trees and bushes, hippos have retreated to their patches of river or oxbow lake, and lions are hanging out in the shade.

The bush is never completely quiet though. A few stragglers remain. Crickets, katydids, cicadas and other insects can still be heard, albeit at lower intensity. A few birds seem to remember they need to advertise their territories so they call every now and then, only to get tired and stop.

It's the perfect time to take it easy. I'm in my hut overlooking the Kapamba river, tired from waking up at 5 am and going on a game drive. I just had a delicious lunch and I'm ready for my midday nap. I want to listen to the soundscape for a few more minutes, but tiredness gets the best of me so I drift into sleep while my brain still keeps track of occasional bits of birdsong.
