I have always liked adventure and gambling. Stone carving is definitely a challenging gamble. You can break or miscalculate a piece at multiple moments. It keeps things interesting and my attention sharp. During basic blocking, I found the right side of the Modern Athena sculpture, which means the front and the sides of the figure are starting to appear in the block.

"Over twenty years ago, I dreamed of carving a female figure of major stature - a Modern Athena on the scale of Michelangelo’s David out of a single block of marble. It seemed an impossible dream. However, in 2014, a friend offered me some blocks of marble and I began teaching myself how to carve stone. In the ensuing years, I have exhibited and sold works nationally and internationally, along with completing residencies in Italy and Greece. I am currently carving a small scale version and releasing weekly progress videos on social media. The Modern Athena sculpture is about breaking limitations, for myself and anyone." - Jyl Bonaguro
