Описание к видео Kidney Stones: Management, Treatment and Prevention Video - Brigham and Women's Hospital

Gary Curhan, MD, SCD, Division of Renal (Kidney) Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), discusses management, treatment, and prevention of kidney stones.

Twenty percent of men and ten percent of women will form at least one stone during their lifetime and in the United States, over 19 million individuals have had a history of kidney stones. The group that's most likely to form stones is white males, usually between the ages of about 40 and 60.

There are two ways to identify if someone has kidney stones – sever pain in which the patient presents to the emergency room or physician or by X- ray or computed tomography (CT) scan. Asymptomatic kidney stones may be found incidental to another radiology study.

Nephrologists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital can help patients prevent kidney stones by taking a careful history to find out about how many stones they've had, by evaluating the patient, their diet, family history, and other lifestyle conditions that may relate to stone formation. Lab tests may also reveal if there is a systemic cause to why they may be forming kidney stones.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital has among the largest and the longest ongoing studies of kidney stone prevention. These studies, which began in the mid-1980s, involve several hundred thousand people from across the United States.
