Ever want to run your carburetor dry on your inverter generator but you can't find the shutoff valve? Here's a little trick that's NOT in the manual you can try that will only take a few minutes!


Inverter generators often have a control panel with a knob that simply turns the generator on or off, and doesn't really offer an obvious method to turn off the fuel shutoff valve.

When I put my generators away for storage, I typically run the carburetor dry and let the generator stall out instead of draining the carburetor after the engine turns off. It just saves a little time in the grand scheme of things.

If you like to do this method as well but don't know how with an inverter generator go ahead and slowly turn the knob to the off position until the generator sounds like it's about to turn off. Quickly turn the knob back about 1/8 of an inch so that the generator stays running and doesn't stall out.

This will, in effect, cut off the carburetor from the fuel supply. The generator will likely remain running for another 2-3 minutes before it will stall completely. Once that is done, turn off the fuel cap vent, and then turn the knob to the "off" position.

Your generator's carburetor is now empty and is ready for storage until the next power outage!
