Hiking to Kiger Gorge, Steens Mountain Summit & Wildhorse Lake in 4K | Steens Mountain Wilderness

Come along on a trip along the rim of the High Steens Mountains as my wife and I explore Kiger Gorge, East Rim Overlook, Steens Mountain Summit and hike down to Wildhorse Lake. Seeing all these sights in a day is easily done if you stay the night at Page Springs Campground just outside of Frenchglen as we did on July 4th weekend.

THIS HIKE
Prior to the hike enjoy the drive along Steens Mountain Loop Road, a backcountry byway. The road was originally built up to fish lake in 1930 by the CCC and completed 32 years later in 1962. The Steens Mountain Wilderness, managed by the BLM, was designated not long ago in the year 2000 by congress. All four of the sights and trails in this video are located in the wilderness. Kiger gorge overlook is just a short 100 yard walk from the parking area to a stunning example of glacial sculpting. The east rim overlook is only 50 feet from the parking area to a great view over the Alvord desert. The hike to Steens Mountain summit is an easy 1 mile roundtrip hike along a gravel road. Finally the hike down to Wildhorse Lake is only 2.4 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1100 feet, however it can be rather exhilarating depending on the amount of snow still left. On our trip we had to traverse a small cliff band in order to get to the trail! Once you reach the lake please be conscious of where you steep. These fragile alpine plants don't have much of a growing season and every boot print takes a toll.
