Nissan X-Trail Nismo 2024: Sporty SUV Takes on Toyota RAV4 GR Sport with Bold Design
Nissan has officially unveiled the X-Trail Nismo, a sporty SUV that aims to bring performance styling and handling upgrades to the brand’s popular crossover. The reveal took place in Japan, where the X-Trail, known in other markets as the Nissan Rogue, has just received its mid-cycle facelift. While it looks aggressive and comes with handling-focused upgrades, the Nismo version skips the one thing enthusiasts often hope for—more power.
On the outside, the X-Trail Nismo immediately makes a statement with its dynamic and performance-inspired bodywork. This isn’t just a mild facelift; Nismo has gone all in with a package that includes a bold front splitter bearing the Nismo logo, extended side skirts, and a rear diffuser complete with an F1-style brake light. Red accents—a Nismo trademark—run along the exterior, contrasting beautifully with the available Stealth Gray paint and black roof. According to Nissan, the body kit isn’t purely cosmetic. It actually reduces lift by 29%, improving stability at speed.
The SUV sits on exclusive 20-inch Enkei aluminum wheels, wrapped in wider Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, designed to offer improved grip and better brake cooling. These upgrades suggest that while the X-Trail Nismo may not deliver more horsepower, it certainly promises a sportier drive.
Inside, the cabin has also received the Nismo touch. Black upholstery with red stitching sets the tone, while optional Recaro sports seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara provide a true performance feel. These aren’t just for show either—they’re equipped with power recline and heating, ensuring comfort is not sacrificed. Unlike the regular X-Trail, which offers a seven-seat layout, the Nismo version is strictly a five-seater, focusing on driver and passenger engagement rather than maximum family practicality.
But here’s where things get interesting. Many expected the X-Trail Nismo to come with a power bump. Instead, Nissan has chosen to keep the familiar e-Power hybrid system, which pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine working as a generator with dual electric motors. Combined, the system delivers 211 hp and 525 Nm of torque. While this is sufficient for most daily drives, it falls short compared to the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, which boasts 320 hp from a plug-in hybrid setup.
Still, Nissan insists that the Nismo variant is not about outright power. Instead, the focus is on handling. The X-Trail Nismo is the first Nissan to use Kayaba Swing Valve shock absorbers, a technology that reduces body roll without compromising comfort. The standard e-4ORCE AWD system has been recalibrated to provide stronger torque distribution to the rear axle and improved torque vectoring at the front wheels. Add to that a retuned Vehicle Control Module with a more aggressive Sport mode, and the result is an SUV that promises sharper driving dynamics and more engaging road manners.
Pricing in Japan starts at ¥5,416,400 and goes up to ¥5,962,000, depending on the trim and options. The Recaro seats add another ¥489,500, making it clear that this is a premium take on Nissan’s best-selling SUV.
The big question now is whether this exciting model will make its way outside of Japan. For the moment, Nissan has not confirmed global availability. However, with the next-generation Rogue expected to debut in the United States by mid-2026, there’s speculation that Nissan could launch a Nismo version of that model instead of retrofitting the current generation.
In summary, the Nissan X-Trail Nismo may not pack extra horsepower, but it offers a compelling mix of sporty looks, upgraded handling, and Nismo exclusivity. It’s a clear rival to Toyota’s RAV4 GR Sport, though in a different way—choosing agility and style over raw power. For SUV enthusiasts who want everyday practicality combined with a performance edge, this is one crossover worth watching.
