1L Dominique Rouge interviews Professor Iselin Gambert, the Interim Director of the Fundamentals of Lawyering Program, Director of the GW Law Writing Center, and Vegan and Animal Rights Scholar. Professor Gambert, who also teaches in the areas of feminism and animal rights will this year teach a seminar on Gender, Race, and Species. She describes her decision as a 12-year-old to become a vegetarian and her realization in her 20's that she wanted no part of a lifestyle that perpetuated consumption of "animal" food. She became a vegan and an activist for a legal system that encourages the manufacture and sale of plant-based foods, including laws that permit plant-based foods to be labeled by such names as milk, cheese, yogurt, and burgers. In her ideal world, society would ask whether animals should be food at all. Our 2020-21 1Ls have been working on a problem involving a business selling plant-based foods and cooking supplies. One of the assignments students worked on involved intentional infliction of emotional distress by a chef who might have introduced animal meat product to food consumed by a vegan cooking student. Professor Gambert's interview reveals the type of thoughtful commitment to animal rights that would cause the plaintiff in the problem to find outrageous the notion of such a cavalier adulteration of her food. She also demonstrates how the practice of law can celebrate and serve one's values.
