Storm Floris has arrived, and the United Kingdom is facing some of the most dangerous summer weather conditions in recent years. The Met Office has issued a series of urgent warnings, including a yellow wind warning covering northern England, northern Wales, Northern Ireland, and most of Scotland from six o’clock this morning until six o’clock tomorrow morning. On top of that, an amber warning for wind, carrying a clear danger-to-life notice, is in force across much of Scotland from ten in the morning until ten at night.
This amber warning is the most serious of its kind for wind in the summer months, with forecasters warning that gusts could reach between eighty and ninety miles per hour in exposed coastal and highland areas. Even inland, wind speeds could reach fifty to seventy miles per hour, with the possibility of up to eighty-five in some locations. The Met Office is warning that flying debris could cause injury or death, large waves could flood coastal roads and properties, and power lines may be brought down.
Public authorities and transport operators are advising against all non-essential travel. Train companies including LNER and Avanti West Coast have told passengers not to travel north of Newcastle or Preston due to expected disruption. In Scotland, many rail routes have been cancelled for the day, with speed restrictions imposed on those still running. Key lines including Edinburgh to Fife, Perth to Dundee, Aberdeen to Inverness, and the West Highland line are closed from midday onwards.

Power outages are also likely, especially in rural and exposed communities. The Met Office is reminding the public to secure loose objects outside their homes, avoid coastal areas, and remain indoors while warnings are in effect.
If you are in the amber warning area, the most dangerous period will be between ten in the morning and ten at night. For those in the yellow warning zones, conditions will still be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in exposed locations. Even outside the main warning areas, unsettled weather with strong gusts and heavy showers will persist through the day.
Looking ahead, the storm is expected to move eastward into the North Sea late tonight, with winds gradually easing across western areas by the early hours of Tuesday. However, yellow warnings remain in place until six in the morning for much of northern Britain. While conditions should improve by midweek, residual gusty winds and showers will continue in some areas.
