In WhatsApp, check marks next to messages indicate their delivery and read status. A single gray tick means the message was sent, two gray ticks mean it was delivered, and two blue ticks mean it was read by the recipient. If you're not seeing the double tick or blue tick as expected, the issue may be due to privacy settings either on your end or the recipient’s.

To check and adjust your settings, open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner. Select 'Settings' and then tap on 'Privacy.' Look for the option labeled 'Read receipts.' If this toggle is turned off, you won’t be able to see when others have read your messages, and they won’t see when you’ve read theirs either—this disables the blue double tick feature. Turn 'Read receipts' on to restore the functionality.

It’s important to note that even with read receipts enabled, double ticks may still not appear if the recipient has turned off their mobile data or Wi-Fi, has blocked you, or has disabled read receipts on their own account. Additionally, group chats will always show read receipts for all participants regardless of this setting.

Keep in mind that turning read receipts off is a global setting—it applies to all your one-on-one chats. For voice messages, however, read receipts are always shown regardless of your settings.
