STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people on Saturday joined the annual Christopher Street Day parade in Berlin.
Wearing colourful costumes, they took to the streets to dance, sing and celebrate gay and lesbian life.
Despite the adverse weather conditions, some 60 floats joined in the parade, which was themed "diversity seeks work", with participants calling for greater equality in the workplace and in schools.
Organisers of this year's event said some four hundred thousand people took part.
The gay pride parade is held each year in honour of the first uprising of homosexuals and other minorities against police assaults that took place in New York's Christopher Street, Greenwich Village on June 27, 1969.
Their protest eventually led to further demonstrations calling for the rights of homosexuals and transsexuals.
The first Christopher Street Day parade in Germany took place in 1979 in Berlin.
