This video depicts my latest digital commission of the Toronto skyline called ‘Home on the Horizon’. It’s a digital painting which I made into 2 giclee art prints for the collector.

👏 Here’s what to think about when commissioning a painting:

PLAN in ADVANCE. We’re used to getting things fast but be suspicious of artists that promise really fast turn arounds for art. It’s important to give as much time as possible. My minimum turnaround is 2 weeks for a digital painting & 3 months for an oil painting & that usually requires putting all other projects on hold.

REACH OUT. Don’t be afraid to ask for rates or ask questions if it’s not already on the artist website. Just be respectful of the artists time, provide all the information, & have clarity about what you want. Artists are actually often scammed with commission requests on social media so avoid dms or post comments - find out how best to contact them via their website or link in bio.

COMMUNICATE UPFRONT. Don’t be put off if you’re asked to sign a commission agreement, it just clarifies everything before the process begins. Make sure you share right away if you have any requests eg. the artwork is a surprise you want to keep off social media until finished.

Remember, even though you commissioned the work, the artist still retains the copyright. This means they alone have the right to reproduce & sell the image.

KEEP RECORDS. eg. if it’s varnished. This helps you preserve the painting down the line. I give this information along with a certificate of authenticity when you receive the work.
