I begin by asking ChatGPT to design a fly, working through its suggested materials list and tying notes as you’d receive them on the screen. I then turn to author and experienced angler Arthur Macdonald, who provides his own fly design, along with the thinking behind the materials and proportions.
Both flies are tied at the vice, step by step, using the guidance provided. The aim isn’t to declare a winner, but to look at the differences in approach — how each design is constructed, what it’s trying to achieve in the water, and how experience and observation shape fly patterns.
This is a practical, thoughtful look at fly design, combining modern tools with traditional angling knowledge, and seeing what each brings to the bench.
