Trigger warning: Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black male student, was found hanging from a tree. Reed was attending Delta State University in Mississippi. His death has sparked outrage across the Black community amid an ongoing police investigation.

Reed’s body was discovered near the pickleball courts on campus on the morning of September 15, according to Delta State’s Director of Public Safety, Mike Peeler. Police reported no evidence of foul play, citing the absence of injuries or wounds on Reed’s body, and initially linked his death to an apparent suicide.

Despite this briefing, given the historical and social context of misreporting and the mistreatment of Black bodies, many online believe Reed may have been lynched.

As the investigation unfolds, it is important for media outlets to be mindful of the images they choose when reporting Reed’s story. Statistically and systemically, news coverage of Black men has often relied on photographs that reinforce stereotypes, minimizing empathy and framing them negatively. It is imperative that media companies select photos that accurately represent the individual and the truth of the story, rather than perpetuating biased narratives that mislead audiences.

In contrast, following Tyler Robinson’s killing of conservative talk show host Charlie Kirk, many outlets have circulated images of Robinson that portray him in a calm or sympathetic light. Meanwhile, a few photos of Reed being shared can easily be taken out of context. The role of journalists and media companies must be to report facts objectively, not to redirect public perception with misleading imagery that fuels bias and subjectivity.

As Reed’s case continues to be investigated, the hashtag #JusticeForTrey has gained traction online to keep attention on his story. It is important to say his name alongside the names of other Black men and women who have been violently attacked or have mysteriously disappeared at the hands of perpetrators.
