TITLE: By Blood or By Sweat: Two Kinds of Martyrdom
SPEAKER: Brother Anthony of Taizé

DATE: Tuesday. January 31, 2023. 7:30PM (Seoul)

SUMMARY:
Andrew Kim and Thomas Choe were born in the same year, 1821, walked across China together to Macao in 1837, studied together in Macao, then spent time together in Manchuria waiting for a chance to re-enter Korea. Andrew Kim entered first, early in 1845, sailed back to Shanghai, was ordained as a priest, landed in Korea in October 1845, was arrested in June the next year and was beheaded as a traitor on September 16, 1846, less than a year after his arrival. Thomas Choe was only able to enter Korea at the end of 1849, spent over ten years walking around the country ministering to the scattered Christians, and died of exhaustion on June 15, 1861. Andrew Kim is celebrated as a “martyr of Blood” while Thomas Choe is said to be a “martyr of Sweat.” Both wrote some 20 letters in Latin to the French priests who had taught them. Both sets of letters, translated into English by the speaker, have now been published. Tonight he will compare the image of the two men seen in their letters.

BIO:
Brother Anthony has lived in Korea since 1980. He was President of RAS Korea for 10 years and is now its President Emeritus. He has published many translations of Korean poetry and fiction, and is now engaged in rendering the history of the early Korean Catholic Church into English.
