Thailand's parliament has recently approved a landmark marriage equality bill, making it the first Southeast Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. The bill, which passed overwhelmingly in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, now awaits royal assent from King Rama X to become law. This will occur 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette.
The new law will amend 68 provisions of Thailand's Civil and Commercial Code, changing the definition of marriage from "a man and a woman" to "two individuals." This change will grant same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples, including inheritance and adoption rights.
Thailand's progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, despite its conservative Buddhist roots.
