The ' bullet nose " grille piece returned for a second year, though criticized, the look is popular and drew considerable attention, and even today the bullet nose Studebaker is a symbolic and iconic front end design. A second chrome circle is added this year. Automatic Drive is available after it's introduction during the 1950 year. Overdrive equipped STudebakers accelerates to 60 mph in less than 13 seconds. Studebaker is the first car manufacturer to install Orlon convertible tops. Engineers pondered an overhead cam for the engine, even a hemi, but chose overhead valve design. Studebaker's first overhead valve V8 from an independent car maker and first in the low price field was expected to spark sales. The Studebaker V8 contributed to small block engine technology and helped topple price barriers between popular priced and luxury cars. You see, for an independent car maker, the above shows how hard Studebaker tried to keep ahead against the large competition. Studebaker production dropped to 246,195 units in an abbreviated model year and ranked 9th in the industry. There are only two models this year, the Champion and the Commander. Both models have Deluxe and Regal brands. Champion also had the Custom and Commander had the State and Land Cruiser brands. The engine for the Champion was a straight 6, 169 cubes with 85 horses and the Commander had the V8, 232 cubes with 120 horses. This Champion shown here has something completely different under the hood. It's a GM, 5.3 litre engine. Again, for the owner to drive cross country with plenty of power and get up and go. Note all of the unique characteristics of this bullet nose Champion: Push-out air vents in front fenders, suicide doors, chrome gravel guard, large taillights, hey, a one-piece rear backlight glass, original upholstery, always a flat Studebaker dash and finished in Sahara Sand light yellow paint.
