A Particularly rare desert snowstorm brings out people to enjoy, possibly, one last taste of winter weather (or not?). Once again, the desert turned into a Winter Wonderland! This time, most everyone got in on the excitement, regardless of their elevation.

This low-pressure system is part of a larger one that is bringing severe weather to the SE states and brought snow and heavy rains to California. Many people got out this morning to enjoy a drive through Saguaro National Park as well as other areas in the Tucson, metro area to take pictures of this rare winter event, build snowmen, have snowball fights and just enjoy this unusual winter we are experiencing before a warm period of temperatures finally settles in for this upcoming weekend and early next week. This is not the first time snow has fallen this winter in the Old Pueblo. Depending on ones’ location and how early some may wake up, this more organized winter event is the third or, even, the fourth time snow has fallen this season. However, the watches and warnings were put in place well before this system arrived and folks had plenty of notice to prepare for it. Most areas in the Valley saw anywhere from a trace of the wet-heavy stuff to several inches and higher elevations saw considerably more accumulations which were welcome since skiers got to enjoy some fresh snow cover this morning.

The first, quick clip shows an ADOT highway sign that is quite a rare site. It states: “Snow and Ice; Watch for Plows; Slow Down.” This is something more common to the Midwest. Temperatures and abundant sunshine this afternoon allowed for quick melting of this rare occurrence. You will also notice, at the end, that the Catalina Mountains snow cover comes down all of the way to the Valley floor (so breathtaking).
