Empathy is critical for building connection with your teen so they feel heard and seen in what’s true for them. Unfortunately, it misses the target and has the opposite effect when you’re more concerned about changing your teen’s mind.

Hearing that your teen is struggling with big, challenging emotions and negative self image triggers your brain into fight or flight, or the specific parenting version I call FIX.

Your fears become more important than being with them in their feelings so you start with empathy.... and then end up totally invalidating them trying to convince them that what they feel isn’t true, good for them or pleasing to you in some way.
