The Finance Ministry has reopened a major proposal: merging three PSU general insurers into one giant company:
✔️ Oriental Insurance
✔️ National Insurance
✔️ United India Insurance

These companies were struggling for years, and between 2019–2022, the government had to pump in ₹17,450 crore just to stabilise them.

The merger was first announced in 2018, dropped in 2020, and replaced with another ₹12,450 crore capital infusion.

But now things have changed. Their finances have improved, and the merger plan is back on the table, aiming for:
➡️ Higher efficiency
➡️ Lower operational costs
➡️ Stronger scale

And that’s not all…
The government is also reviewing the privatization of one general insurance company, a plan announced in Budget 2021 but pending since.

PLUS, a major reform is coming:
📌 A bill to raise FDI in insurance from 74% to 100% is ready for the Winter Session.
This could unlock:
✔️ More global players
✔️ More capital
✔️ Deeper insurance penetration

India’s insurance sector is heading for a complete reboot - mergers, privatization, FDI liberalization… all happening at once.
The next few weeks could decide everything.
