🎯 1. Basic Grammar

Many students don’t learn the rules of English, nor do many schools do a good job teaching you. If you’re starting from scratch and you learn well from videos, look at CAT Basic Verbal Ability videos.

If you’re weak in VA, don’t just read the question out loud and try to answer based on ‘gut-feeling’. Let’s take one question where the options might sound correct (read the question and options); however, here’s my thought process:

So, learn to separate your ‘gut feeling’ from ‘thought process’ and learn these patterns in sentence formation, if x comes first, then y will be there.

🎯 2. Read and comprehend

There is no shortcut or tricks in RCs. Anyone you know who successfully completes an RC has good comprehension and reading speed, which was acquired through practice.

The IPMAT 2022 had an RC based on an article published in The Economist 9 months before the exam. Reading various topics makes you comfortable that no matter the topic of the RC, you will be able to process it.

You must also improve your reading speed while maintaining comprehension, which is possible through concentration and practice. Read it in your mind and summarise the article at the end to enhance their retention capabilities. Also, I sometimes used to draw a rough flow chart to maintain my retention, yes, it took me a minute more, but it also increased accuracy.

You can practice basic questions from GMAT Club. The questions there are eerily similar to what gets asked in IPMAT.

🎯 3. Vocabulary

WPME is a good book, read it like a story book. However, it could be time consuming. So you can even look at vocabulary.com’s commonly confusing words, 3-4 words have come directly from there.

Phrasal Verbs & Idioms: Afterboards’ Playground. e.g. look in (to visit a person for a short time), look into (to investigate), look through (to quickly read through a book or ignore someone by pretending not to see them)

🎯 4. Mock Strategy

Look at the VA section as a different exam, and do not let your emotions from the quants section follow you here. Else, you might be prone to spoiling this section too.

Some people do RC initially, while others do it in the end to not spend too much time on it. There is no hard-and-fast rule; you must see what works for you. Give mocks and experiment with the strategy that could work out for you. In mocks, bookmark unusual sentence structures and questions that felt complex.

🎯 5. Harsh Truth

It is impossible to become better than someone who has been practising English for the past 10-15 years of their life. However, it is not impossible to clear the IPMAT VA cutoff if you’re starting now.

You're unfair to yourself when you compare yourself with someone with a headstart. It is impractical if you start learning how to sing today and expect to be Arijit Singh in a week. Compare yourself with who YOU were a week back, and that’s how you’ll measure your progress.

VA is a vast topic. There’s no distinct line on where the IPMAT Syllabus ends, so it looks overwhelming, and even progress is hard to notice. It is a slow process, so don’t be hasty or impractical, thinking you can do it all.

You might not become perfect in English in the next 80 days, but you might understand the pattern of the questions, you already have the pattern of the exam paper, and once you grasp it all, even if VA isn’t your strength, but you’re practising questions and recognising patterns more accurately, you will clear the cut-offs.

However, just clearing cut-offs isn’t enough, so play to your strength. Maximise your scores in QA, as IPMAT Indore doesn’t sort students per the descending order of the marks. They see the ATS formula. To know more about that, check out the video that we uploaded on our video!
